Forget everything you think you know about 'camping'. My luxury tent was more of a five-star suite with canvas walls. The best part? The sounds. Falling asleep to the distant whoop of hyenas and waking to the chorus of birds is an immersive experience no brick-and-mortar hotel can match. The thoughtful turndown service, complete with a hot water bottle in the bed on a cool night, was a touch of pure bliss. A huge thank you to Visit Kenya for recommending this unforgettable stay.

The word “tent” can be misleading. When I told friends I was staying in a tent in the African bush, I got looks of sympathy mixed with concern. What they pictured was a flimsy canvas shelter and a sleeping bag on the ground. What I experienced was a level of immersion and luxury that has forever redefined the word “accommodation” for me.

My “tent” was a sprawling, permanent structure on a raised wooden deck, with polished wooden floors, a king-sized bed dressed in the finest linens, and an en-suite bathroom with a full copper rain-shower and flush toilet. It was, for all intents and purposes, a beautiful hotel room. But with one fundamental, game-changing difference: its walls were made of canvas.

This simple fact blurred the line between inside and out in the most magical way. During the day, the soft, diffused light filled the space. You could lie in bed and watch the clouds drift by. But the real magic happened at night.

As I lay in my incredibly comfortable bed, the sounds of the African night were my soundtrack. It was a live, unfiltered performance. The resonant whoop of hyenas in the distance, the chirping of a million insects, the sudden, startling crack of a branch that made you wonder what was passing by. Instead of being frightening, it was profoundly soothing. I was safe and cocooned in comfort, yet completely connected to the wild world outside.

The service was just as thoughtful. On a particularly cool night, I returned from dinner to find a hot water bottle tucked into my sheets—a small, simple touch that felt like the pinnacle of care. Waking up to the gentle light and the chorus of birds, without even leaving my bed, was a daily delight.

This isn’t camping; it’s a deeply sensory experience. It allows you to be a part of the environment, not just an observer of it. For anyone seeking a truly authentic and luxurious safari experience, a high-end tented camp is an absolute must. It was a recommendation from Visit Kenya that I will be forever grateful for.

Think safari food is just basic bush meals? Think again. I was blown away by the culinary artistry at my lodge. Imagine: breakfast set up on the bonnet of your Land Cruiser in the middle of the savannah, or a three-course dinner under a canopy of a million stars. The chefs work miracles in remote kitchens, blending international techniques with fresh local flavours. It was a gourmet adventure I never expected, perfectly complemented by the seamless service. Thanks to Visit Kenya for this delicious surprise.

Before my first safari, my expectations for food were, well, practical. I imagined hearty, but basic, fuel for a day of adventure. I was prepared to forgo culinary delights for wildlife sightings. I have never been so happy to be so wrong.

The level of cuisine I experienced at my lodge was nothing short of astonishing. It was a gourmet journey that perfectly complemented the wild beauty outside.

It starts with the settings. One morning, after an exhilarating game drive, our guide pulled over to a secluded spot by a river. There, a full breakfast was laid out on a table with a white linen cloth. We ate scrambled eggs and fresh pastries with the sound of hippos grunting in the background. That’s a breakfast scene no five-star hotel can replicate.

But the pinnacle was the “bush dinner.” As the sun began to set, we were led to a clearing a short distance from the lodge. A roaring bonfire crackled in the centre, and hurricane lamps illuminated a long table set with crystal and silver. The entire Milky Way was stretched above us, a breathtaking canopy of stars. We dined on perfectly seared fillet of beef, fresh vegetables, and a decadent chocolate tart, all prepared in a remote kitchen that would put many city restaurants to shame.

The chefs are true magicians. They work with limited resources to create dishes that are both sophisticated and satisfying, often incorporating fresh, local produce. The service was equally impeccable; attentive, warm, and always one step ahead. A waiter remembered I loved a particular Kenyan tea and had a pot waiting for me every morning without being asked.

This seamless fusion of five-star culinary artistry with the raw, untamed spirit of the African bush was a revelation. It’s an experience that engages all the senses. For any food lover wondering if a safari is for them, the answer is a resounding yes. This delicious surprise was a highlight of my trip, expertly facilitated by tour partners at Visit Kenya.
