Description
A walk on the wild side
Tucked deep in the floor of the Great Rift Valley and rising between 1,560 and 2,187 meters above sea level, Hell’s Gate National Park in Naivasha offers an unforgettable fun-in-the-wild experience for visitors of all ages. Just a short drive from Nairobi, the park’s convenient access and excellent road network make it one of Kenya’s most popular weekend adventures. Though compact at 68 sq. km, Hell’s Gate packs a world of natural wonders and outdoor excitement.
Attractions & Activities
From towering cliffs, sculpted gorges, and dramatic rock towers to geothermal steam vents rising from the nearby Olkaria Geothermal Power Station, the park is alive with geological drama and breathtaking scenery.
Two main circuit trails wind through the park, ideal for walking, cycling, and game drives (guided by KWS rangers or local community guides). Visitors can explore Hobley’s Volcano, the Ol Basta Rock Tower, and picnic at scenic sites like Lake View Point, Moibeni, Hell’s Kitchen, Kapartania View Point, and the obsidian caves.
Wildlife abounds across the open grasslands — including zebra, giraffe, eland, buffalo, Thomson’s gazelle, hartebeest, klipspringer, serval cat, leopard, and many more. With over 103 bird species, the park is also a paradise for bird lovers, featuring the Mervyn Carnelley Raptor Hide, where visitors can photograph birds of prey at close range.
One of Hell’s Gate’s most iconic landmarks is Fischer’s Tower, a 25-metre volcanic plug named after German explorer Gustav Fischer. According to Maasai legend, it represents a chief’s daughter turned to stone after defying tradition — a tale that adds mystique to this popular rock-climbing site.
Inside the park lies the Olkaria Geothermal Station and the renowned Olkaria Geothermal Spa, where mineral-rich waters containing sulphur and silica are believed to have healing properties. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy a rejuvenating swim in a natural geothermal pool — a rare treat in the wild.
Whether hiking, cycling, rock climbing, bird watching, or soaking in the warm spa waters, Hell’s Gate National Park truly lives up to its name — an adventure-filled gateway into the heart of nature.
