Land of Majestic Peaks, Moorlands & Intriguing Falls

The Aberdares are a spectacular, isolated volcanic mountain range forming the eastern wall of the Great Rift Valley. It’s significantly cooler here, offering a completely fresh perspective on the country. As you rise above the tree line, you’ll find a world of mountainous terrain swathed in mist and covered in thick, tropical forests. The views are truly breathtaking, with the undulating rise and fall of misty valleys, hills, and mountains creating a powerful spectacle. This is the place for some real ‘me’ time, peace, and tranquility, all wrapped up in deep, lush, clean, crisp mountain air.

The Aberdares offer a unique and thrilling game-viewing experience. Imagine the excitement of elephants and buffaloes making a sudden, quick dash in and out of the thick rainforest! One of the best ways to see the local wildlife is at one of the lodges’ waterholes. The park is home to a fantastic array of animals, including Black rhino, Black Serval, and the rare Eastern Bongo (a huge forest antelope). You’ll also spot leopards, lions, giraffes, and several monkey species like the blue and Colobus monkey.

The park holds a special place in history, too: Treetops Lodge is famously where Princess Elizabeth was staying when she learned of her father’s death, making her Queen. Since that momentous event, the lodge has been a popular and iconic stop for visitors.

As a true wilderness adventure park, the Aberdares are characterized by high mountain peaks, icy mountain streams, deep ravines, and a stunning moorland plateau. The mountainous scenery is a major highlight, renowned for its torrential waterfalls plunging from cloud-shrouded heights into spray-filled ravines. Don’t miss the magnificent Karuru Water Falls, whose crystal-clear waters drop an impressive 300m, or the spectacular Gura Water Falls cascading from the opposite side of the same gorge. You can also visit the sheer drop of the Chania Water Falls and the enchanting Magura Water Falls by the Queen’s Cave.

For a unique and picturesque attraction, seek out the Dragon Teeth, a volcanic rock formation in the northern moorlands that looks like a rugged set of teeth. Nearby, the Twin Peaks/Towers are another magical sight in the foggy moorlands, formed from dramatic volcanic outcrops.

Are you an adrenaline-filled outdoor adventure lover? If you’re always on the go, the Aberdares is your kind of place! You can explore the park on exhilarating game drives or trek up the high peaks to take in the spectacular scenery.

For a fantastic day trip, escape the routine and breathe in the clean, crisp air as you hike up the Elephant and Satima Hills trails via Shamata. This hiking activity is gaining huge popularity with groups, friends, and family looking for a one-day adventure that combines perfectly with a fun road trip. It’s a wilderness adventure park just waiting to be explored!
